Space Heaters: Cozy Comfort or Circuit Chaos?
The big rules (that actually matter)
- No extension cords. Most are not rated for heater load.
- No power strips. They can overheat fast under heavy draw.
- Keep heaters 3 feet away from curtains, bedding, furniture.
- Turn off when sleeping (unless it’s specifically designed and rated for safe overnight use—still not a gamble worth taking).
Signs your heater setup is unsafe
- Outlet feels warm
- Plug looks discolored
- Breaker trips when the heater turns on
- Lights dim when the heater cycles
Space heaters add comfort in winter, but overloading outlets or circuits can turn cozy into dangerous. Warm outlets dim lights, or tripped breakers are warnings—stay safer with smart heating habits now
Your roadmap is simple: start with an assessment and load calculation, prepare a permit set, plan any service changes with the utility, rewire circuit by circuit with AFCI/GFCI protection, upgrade and label the panel, then pass final inspection and keep a clear turnover packet for records and resale.
A smarter “warmth plan”
Can I keep any knob and tube in service
Not if you want modern safety and insurance comfort. We recommend de-energizing and abandoning after new circuits are live.
Do I have to move out during a rewire
Not always. Phased work and temporary power plans can keep sections of the house livable.
Will a rewire destroy my walls
We use strategic fishing, attic and basement access, and patch-ready holes to reduce disruption.
