The 2027 Water Heater Rule: What San Francisco Owners Should Know
The Bay Area's zero-NOx rule changes which water heaters can be installed in San Francisco. Dates, the November 4 vote, exemptions, wiring and costs explained.
- 01Nobody has to remove a working gas water heater. The rule applies when a unit is replaced.
- 02On November 4 the air district votes on delaying the date to 2028 and adding exemptions.
- 03Most SF homes can wire a heat pump water heater. A 120-volt model may avoid new circuits.
